Not expecting a huge update here other than Sandy Bridge, Thunderbolt, and 6XXX series AMD graphics.

I can not believe how long it has taken me to finally bother to register here...And it has taken the release of an iMac to do it.

Ironically I've been a longtime reader myself and just registered because of this article, though for exactly the opposite reason as you. :D

And yes I realize my complaints about a mid-range tower probably seem pointless to most. But the iMac just doesn't seem to meet my needs. I'm happy with my current dual monitors (which match in size and resolution) and I'd prefer more than a 128mb graphics card.

Moreover, I've been a Mac user since 1993 and never owned a single LCD-based Mac which didn't have a dead pixel. That's about seven Macs, including my current MacBook. Bad luck, I realize but I'm just not buying an all-in-one desktop from Apple. :p

Ground up rewrite = a whole load of bugs.

It'll be interesting to see how many shops use this for production work when it's finally released.

Depends on how long and wide the beta goes.

I picked up this griffin outfit gloss for my girlfriends ipod touch that I bought her two days ago and the thing scratched the PISS out of the back when we went to peel it off.

Is the Griffin Reveal any different then that? it's about the same in price but it's not 100% polycarbonate.

Just really looking for something... anything to put on this thing until speck comes out with something decent.

Look, they discontinued the $50 BTO superdrive option on the lower end model. Are they purposely trying to drive me to Velocity Micro? The SAVE refurb page has what you want for $649. If you really want that model, pull the trigger.

Never happening, even though this was naturally a joke, because not only would every apple user throw themselves off the highest mountain in Cupertino, but every Windows fanboi would jump off the steepest cliff in Redmond!

My local Office Depot has sold 1 (one) (a white one) since it launched. They have 8 in stock.

I predict it will be one of the biggest flops in consumer history but will be sugarcoated for many more months to come.

I also predict that Apple will beat the iPod holiday sales estimates by greater than 10%.

MSNBC or the Today show will certainly try to do other "puff pieces" to hype it (the Zune) up.

For the love of god Steve, you need to come out with a TiVo/Media Center PC KILLER. I would love to see that.

Yep, cause the media center PCs are selling hand over fist and Tivo is making more money than they know what do do with. Oh, wait...

Only way this works is if Apple makes the movie available for download/rental a week or two before DVD release (or earlier, like hotel PPV). Otherwise, I'll just *obtain* it elsewhere.

I think it'll be a crime for Apple not to use Conroes in the iMac, they withstood the G5 processors so i dont see any reason as to why they cant do the same for Conroe. Using only merom or xeon processors is just to big a gap and is not ideal. Worse it may plumet the iMac sales unless there is a must have feature in the new revision.

Why would i want to upgrade from a current core duo imac to a merom imac when the performance difference is only 10-15% at best...for a desktop it makes no sense whatsoever and that means the iMac would purely be form over function. The again Apple fans tend to buy anything no matter how illogical

According to vendors cited by the article, 17" widescreen monitors will not necessarily be more expensive than the current 17" 4:3 models.

Do the math! A wide screen 17" display has fewer pixels than a 4:3 17" display (given the same dpi).

So I sincerely hope they aren't going to charge more for a wide display that has less pixels than a 4:3 display.

Some definite improvements but I wouldn't go as far as to call it a "jaw-dropper". I was really hoping to see more about how it integrates with the rest of the suite.

Thank Larry Jordan for that "jaw-dropper" remark.

Anyone believe that it could actually be released today...like for consumer consumption?
    I hope not!

It would be kind of nice if ISVs could have a chance to make sure their stuff runs properly under the new release.

Apple will also want there to be a reason for people to pay for upgrades, and third party software that uses new features would be a big part of that.

    According to Bob Cringley:

    http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/2006/pulpit_20060922_000979.html

"Now what about that USB port on the back of each iTV box? Giving his tour of the gizmo last week, Jobs rushed right past the USB port. What could that port be for? It's not for a USB hard drive, that's for sure, because the key brain in this system is back in your Mac or PC and its very large hard drive. Nor will Apple (immediately) enable the iTV to act as a digital video recorder, because that might step on TV network toes before Apple is ready to do so. The USB port is clearly intended for an Apple iSight camera, a webcam to go with your HDTV."

You know what the difference in cost is between a Combo Drive and a Superdrive?

    About $5

Well, that may be, but Apple likes nice round even numbers.

This will be interesting. The issue that I see concerns ancillary data. I really dislike how the iphone handles application data, but it is--at the very least--consistent. You delete the app, you delete the data.

I haven't had the occasion to see how MAS works with deleting, but I can't imagine it doing anything similar, and that creates a rift, in my opinion.

You know you're talking to a fanboy when they dismiss and downplay an issue such as this one.

You should be ashamed. You think because someone makes a shiny phone they can treat you this way?

I wonder how Steve would feel if people could know his location 24/7...

We also make more money, I remember a while ago doing a comparison between a waiter on Aussie award wages and US minimum wage in the purchase of an iBook. The US waiter would have to work ~2x as many hours as the aussie waiter to afford an iBook at our respective online Apple Stores.
Aussie waiters must earn a fortune. My sister in law worked as a waitress in the USA and earned over US$1000 per weekend in wages and tips. So what's it like in Oz?

Well that MBA didn't last too long. How come you're bailing on it?

I didn't even open the MBA to be honest. Bailing because it was $1500 haha. And I just couldn't bring myself to have a second computer that is that price with those specs. And I have a feeling in my bones that the resale value will suck on the first gen 11.6".

.. they could just use a similar setup as their Podcast listings... Apple lists em, for free so far, but the podcasters host the files.True, as long as there is a payment model that works too (for stuff like HBO On Demand). I would prefer to have a single bill for all subscriptions, but if I'm only watching a couple then I could pay them directly.

Of course, if I'm downloading direct from the provider, then someone still has to pay to provide shows (there's a specific cost for each show downloaded). Till now, the purchase model has ensured people pay a larger price per show, and only download once - while a subscription model would be a smaller price per show and it's feasible that some subscribers will watch the same thing again a week later. The download fee becomes a larger portion of the cost.

If Apple released a bittorrent model, it would move the upload cost to subscribers, who often pay nothing for uploads. TWiT reckons it costs Apple 25c/song for a download ... if they're right this would be a significant saving to Apple. If iTunes goes Bittorrent it might fundamentally change usage patterns of the net.

On another note, this would allow Apple to offer a 'backup' of everyone's purchased music and shows - which just means you can re-download them anytime you want rather than store them locally.

Performance and specifications determine whether or not it's a "Pro", not the people who use them. I'm not a professional race car driver, but my car has over 400hp. Does that mean that my car is not the high-performance sports car that the automotive world widely claims it to be?

And besides, how do you know those people aren't using heavy-duty applications? Is a thirty-second observation at Starbucks enough to justify such a statement?

Yes, a 30 second observation of people surfing FB on their Macbook (pros) is sufficient for me to assume that they are not performing complex video rendering or multi-filter Photoshop layering.

Laptops are not Pro machines. A 13" laptop with shared memory and a glossy screen is not professional. Unless your profession is being a writer. The "pro" moniker is a marketing ploy.

I realize the 15" and 17" are more powerful, but you still can't edit 4K RED footage on one, for example. But a Mac Pro? There's nothing professional you can throw at it that it can't do.

Also, regarding the car metaphor: put your 400hp car up against a NASCAR or Formula 1 vehicle and see how well it does on the racetrack against other REAL professional cars.

The car is nice, I'm sure, but is not a vehicle doing professional high performance driving. The same is true of macbook pros. They're solid machines, but they are not professional performance machines.

This is sexy. Having an iPod as a command centre utilizing airplay would return the iPod to being badass.
